Posted: 26 Sep 2011 10:22 PM PDT

We're not saying you should dodge all those touristy Shanghai spots -- leaving here without one photo on the Bund might just look odd -- but roaming downtown and getting lost with your camera in the real Shanghai may be the best thing to happen to you and your Flickr album. That is, if you're well prepared.

Shanghai-based French photographer Franc Péret provides some top tips on shooting everyday Shanghai.

Slums in the sky: Hong Kong rooftop squatters

Posted: 26 Sep 2011 08:00 PM PDT

It's a part of Hong Kong you can only see from above: rooftop slums home to tens of thousands of people.

Unable to afford a regular apartment in Hong Kong's extraordinarily expensive housing market and forced to wait years for a public housing unit, entire families live in illegal shacks on top of the city's apartment blocks.

There are so many rooftop houses that the government doesn't even bother keeping track of them. According to a spokesman for the Buildings Department, there is no data on illegal rooftop houses or other structures.

Posted: 26 Sep 2011 07:25 PM PDT

Ban Talae Nok

Gallery: Bangladesh's box with three locks

Posted: 26 Sep 2011 03:00 PM PDT

None of the people attending the meeting in Bandarban, a rural region in Bangladesh, owns a watch. But come noon, nobody is absent. The faces are solemn, and with good reason.

It is time to manage the savings of one of the poorest communities in Bangladesh, one of the poorest countries in the world.

Travelers come to this region rarely, despite a "Beautiful Bangladesh" tourism campaign. Unlike Dhaka, which attracts travelers and expats and allows access to all the benefits of city life, most of Bangladesh's poverty-stricken rural residents have to improve their lives by themselves.

Dhobi Ghat: Mumbai’s human washing machines

Posted: 26 Sep 2011 02:58 PM PDT

Ever since last year's release of the Bollywood blockbuster of the same name, Dhobi Ghat's become an increasingly popular sight to see.

Tucked away amid the cacophony of Mahalaxmi Station, this open-air laundromat is the perfect place to take your camera and soak in the suds on a Saturday morning.

From the flyover that heads towards Saat Rasta, Dhobi Ghat looks like a neat concrete game of Tetris, with interlocking grids of wash pens of Rs 300 per month that are infused with scattered bundles of a day's worth of the city's laundry.

Upon venturing downwards and into the area, we were greeted by the alluring smell of detergent that creates an atmospheric bubble separating Dhobi Ghat from urban bustle; at least, superficially.

Seoul’s 5 best Korean barbecue restaurants

Seoul best gogi

In Seoul, it can be a daunting task to choose from the staggering number of gogi-jip (literally, "meat houses"), or Korean barbecue restaurants, that sit on almost every corner.

Undeniably a quintessential part of the Korean dining experience, Koreans will take any excuse to head to a barbecue restaurant.

Foodies search for the freshest quality beef --preferably hanwoo (Korean beef)--and are equally critical in terms of the "siksa" (the "meal" following the barbecue, usually comprised of noodles, stew or fried rice).

Where to experience Buddhist hell in Thailand

Posted: 26 Sep 2011 02:57 PM PDT

Come to Thailand and go straight to hell.

Hieronymus Bosch's medieval Garden of Earthly Delights and other paintings include sinners in a Christian hell, but if the Dutch artist is ever reincarnated as a Buddhist, he might be intrigued by Thailand's temple murals and larger-than-life statues of horrific karmic punishments.

Want to copulate in an immoral tryst?  Murder someone? Or violate some other important Buddhist precept?
