Posted: 11 Jul 2011 02:57 AM PDT The buzz in Shanghai this week centers on 7-foot, 6-inch Shanghai-born Yao Ming and recent news reports of the basketball superstar's retirement. Although Yao's Chinese agent, Zhang Mingji, has denied the reports, saying Yao hasn't officially submitted a retirement request, the public reaction in China has been overwhelming. Zhang said Yao will respond to the retirement news and announce his future plans during a press conference in Shanghai on July 20. Read more at CNN. |
Shanghai bids bye-bye to street art icons Posted: 11 Jul 2011 01:55 AM PDT The city's biggest graffiti wall and the M50 art zone are to be demolished, but artists say they'll continue to paint It's great news for Shanghai's property market, but a tragedy for the city's street art lovers and artists. Two of Shanghai's most striking art locales -- the graffiti wall on Moganshan Lu and the M50 creative zone in Putuo -– are to be torn down to make way for a new business development. The owner, Shanghai Kaixuanmen Corporate Development Ltd., told eastday.com that the construction is due to start at the end of this year. "M50 is also within the demolition area," a Kaixuanmen manager said. |
How Singapore is finally learning to laugh at itself Posted: 10 Jul 2011 09:48 PM PDT You should always know better than to sit down next to a stand-up comic, and answer a question about your T-shirt. "Have you ever wondered about your name being Luke, and the fact you wear a Darth Vader T-shirt?" asks Singaporean comic Wayne Cheong, a glint in his eye. "I just thought maybe you had father issues?" In a nation-state derided for being serious and self-censoring, a new wave of funny guys is now willing to stand up and make fun of themselves, their mothers and their people -- whether they're ready for it or not. Popularized in London and New York, while the scene is still small in the Lion City, open mike comedy has been growing steadily and Singapore's new generation of comedians are using the opportunity to riff off each other. |
6 best Hong Kong wedding cake artists Posted: 10 Jul 2011 09:00 PM PDT Hong Kong wedding cakes are decadent, sometimes whimsical and always delicious. Here are our favorite wedding bakers who craft confectionery marvels with meticulous attention to detail, and a lot of passion. Complete Deelite by Jacinta YuJacinta Yu opened her party-wares shop in Lan Kwai Fong seven years ago. She was one of the first to sell party supplies in Hong Kong, importing from the United Kingdom and United States. "When I was young, I loved hosting parties," says Yu. "I did everything myself and had to visit several different stores to get what I needed for a party. So I decided to open my own store that sells everything related to throwing parties." |

Adam Bray: Being fat makes me famous Posted: 10 Jul 2011 02:59 PM PDT For any curious traveler, the hope that you'll arrive at your destination, instantly blend in and be left to explore your new home is a strong one. That hope was instantly dashed for me when I first came to Asia eight years ago, a 1.8-meter, overweight, Caucasian American. The last time I weighed myself the dial only stopped moving once it hit the maximum 100-kilo mark. In contrast, the inhabitants of my new home, Vietnam, are slender and shorter due to a combination of diet and genetics. Individuals here rarely, if ever, attain sizes comparable to my own. I can never hope to blend in. I might as well be Gulliver in Lilliput. |
Nix the natto: Tokyo’s 5 best brunches Posted: 10 Jul 2011 02:55 PM PDT Brunch is an institution. It should be revered and respected for what it's intended to be -- a leisurely weekend meal spent in good company, lingering over savory treats and often libations, recounting the previous night's escapades on the town. We love our raw quail eggs at certain moments, but after a big night out, carbs, grease and a bit of the "hair of the dog" are really in order. 1. Roti RoppongiThis place enjoys a longstanding reputation for its quality brunches. Served from 11:30 a.m to 5 p.m., the extensive American menu features classic brunch items such as omelets and pancakes in addition to plenty of standard dishes and tasty fried goodness. |
Urban tipping guide for Mumbai Posted: 10 Jul 2011 02:55 PM PDT "They go a long way in supplementing our salaries." "It's not compulsory at all ... even a great smile can make our day." "International guests do it more often." "Yes, it would be nice to get one." People in your hair, mixing your drink, driving you to work, delivering your food and massaging your feet say how much you should be tipping them. Follow this guide to all that you can and can't leave behind, in Mumbai. At the hip hair salonTipping senior hairstylists isn't quite as easy as doling out a couple of 20s to your waxing lady at the corner beauty parlor. "I don't end up tipping my stylist not because I'm cheap, but because I feel like it would offend her," says a media professional. |
