Others are carrying on with life as usual Scenes vary dramatically in the Bangkok, where city residents are preparting for what officials warn could be the worst flooding the city has seen in decades. Life is carrying on as usual for many while others are scrambling to stock up on supplies like food, water and flashlights and trying protect their possessions from the expected deluge that will hit as waters from the flooded central plains rush in. Outside homes, businesses and schools in low-lying areas of Bangkok that the government has warned are at risk of being worst hit, people can be seen erecting flood walls out of sandbags to safeguard against the incoming waters. Hong Kong's top public bus sightseeing tours Posted: 10 Oct 2011 03:00 PM PDT One of Hong Kong's best tour options offers unparalleled sights and a healthy dose of local culture at rock-bottom prices. It happens to be the public bus. Suspend your idea of what a public bus is for a moment and consider that the top deck of Hong Kong's double-decker bus fleet offers a unique vantage point from which you can explore all of Hong Kong for just a handful of dollars. The MTR rapid transit railway system is speedy and convenient, but it whisks you mostly underground from place to place and there's little chance to view more than tunnel walls. |

Backpacking to the future: Modern traveler follows original Lonely Planet guide Posted: 10 Oct 2011 02:59 PM PDT Recreating the backpacking experience of the 1970s by using the first Lonely Planet "Southeast Asia on a Shoestring" guidebook A British travel writer created a time-warp and journeyed through Southeast Asia as if he were in 1974 -- an adventure that peaked on psychedelic mushrooms in Indonesia, eating grasshoppers with exploding heads in Myanmar, falling madly in love with a backpacker and discovering that 37 years of modernization have not tamed this exotic region. Brian Thacker describes his adventures in his newest book, "Tell Them to Get Lost," which is now on sale. He used only the 1975 edition of Lonely Planet's "Southeast Asia on a Shoestring" guidebook, obsessively following its advice, maps and hotel listings. |
