Ah, group tours.

Busloads of be-visored, fanny-packed, wide-eyed tourists with curiously staggered needs for bathroom breaks.

But not all group travel is embarrassing. In some destinations, it's crucial. So says a story in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, anyway.

The AJC lists eight places where travelers shouldn't go it alone, and provides information about tour offerings.

Table Mountain secures spot on ‘new wonders’ list

One of the most recognizable mountains in the world just got a little more recognition.

Cape Town's Table Mountain spent the weekend being ushered onto the New 7 Wonders of Nature list, with an official ceremony taking place yesterday.

The 1,086-meter (3,563 feet) mountain, which rises over Cape Town and provides panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding countryside, was voted onto the list in a 2011 poll that drew more than 100 million votes from 220 countries.

A British company has announced a breakthrough engine technology that could be used to power space planes.

Developed by Reaction Engines Ltd. (REL), the new technology to be used in the Sabre (Synergetic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine) engine would enable aircraft to fly into orbit and back directly from a runway, and fly anywhere in the world in four hours.

On a minibus speeding through the dark Malawian night, with more than 30 people squeezed on and between its 15 seats and a door held together with a coat hanger, the middle-aged stranger whose lap I'm sitting on asks where I'm from.

"I'm Australian," I say.

"Can you fit this many people onto a bus in Australia?" the human seat asks.

"No, we most certainly cannot," I reply. I decide against a lecture on road safety, seatbelts and the legalities of overcrowded vehicles.
